Red India - Uppingham
Tucked away in the charming market town of Uppingham, Red India - Uppingham brings a bold flair of South Asian flavor to 2 Stockerston Road, blending classic Indian hospitality with inventive culinary charm. From the moment you step inside, there’s an inviting warmth that feels just right - whether you're a solo diner winding down the day or part of a group hungry for spice and stories.
One of the first things you'll notice is how easygoing the setting is. The seating is thoughtfully spaced and wheelchair accessible, giving everyone room to enjoy their meal without a fuss. Red India doesn’t go overboard with opulence; instead, it leans into comfort, with subtle design touches and gentle lighting that set the tone for a relaxed dinner experience.
When it comes to food, Red India doesn’t just stick to the script. Sure, you’ll find reliable favourites like Butter Chicken - rich, creamy, and just sweet enough to soothe the palate - but look a little closer and you’ll see the chef’s creativity at play. The Chef's Nepalese Chicken is one example, offering a smoky, earthy punch with delicate spice layering that speaks of culinary heritage beyond the usual Indian-British fusion.
Now, if you’re the kind of diner who enjoys both whimsy and fire, you’re in luck. There’s a dish titled - brace yourself - Captain Kirk in Front Prawn Rogan Josh to the Right Behind It. Yes, that's the name, and no, it's not a typo. It might sound like a sci-fi adventure, but this dish lands solidly on the plate: plump prawns in a deep, tomato-based curry with that familiar Rogan Josh aroma and a slightly sweet aftertaste that lingers just long enough to pull you in for another bite.
Pair it with Keema Rice, which comes packed with tender spiced lamb, offering a savory complement to saucier mains. The rice is fragrant and well-balanced - not too oily, not too dry - a detail often overlooked in less attentive kitchens.
For those who enjoy something a bit different with their meal, English Heritage Honey Mead is available and deserves a mention. It’s smooth, lightly sweet, and surprisingly compatible with spicier dishes, making it a curious but welcome companion to the bold flavors on the menu. If mead isn’t your thing, Red India also serves a solid lineup of wines, cold beer, and even coffee for those finishing late.
The restaurant is equally accommodating in terms of service options. Whether you're popping in for a sit-down dinner, grabbing takeaway on the way home, or having your favorites delivered to your door, Red India makes it easy. They also serve halal food and offer late-night meals - a huge plus for anyone craving a post-theatre curry or working late hours.
There’s a noticeable focus here on making sure everyone feels looked after. The staff are friendly without being overbearing, and they know the menu well enough to guide you if you’re undecided. Want something mild but flavorful? They’ll steer you toward the right curries. Looking for something offbeat? They’ve got that covered too.
For dessert, the options aren’t vast but they are rich. Expect traditional sweets like kulfi or gulab jamun - both served warm and indulgent, perfect for closing out a spice-packed dinner. The portion sizes are generous, but not overwhelming, and there's a rhythm to how each dish is served - not rushed, not delayed.
Ultimately, what makes Red India - Uppingham stand out isn’t just the food - although the food is more than enough reason to visit - but the way it brings together thoughtful service, clever menu design, and a quietly welcoming atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where even the regulars keep discovering new favorites, and where first-timers walk away already planning their next visit.
Reviews
Lovely evening, we ate fairly early as out with the grandchildren and I was surprised how busy they were! But everything was great. Definitely recommend a visit.
Excellent food, many choices and lots I hadn't tried before. The room was full but we could still hear each other talk unlike many places. We had poppadoms and pickles to start (there were no hot ones in this selection fyi), then "captain Kirk" chicken - very tasty, with green chillies in that were hot if you got a few in a mouthful. And prawn Rogan Josh (slightly spicy lots of small prawns), chicken tika masala (very nice mild creamy and slightly sweet, I couldn't eat too much of it ), cauliflower dish and lamb special (nice, mild, I preferred the other dishes but some of us preferred this one. We got 2 rice which was plenty for four of us plus 3 nan breads (we didn't managed to finish all the nan, and had a bit of sauces left). Usually plenty of parking in the evening on the street - though there was a carol concert on at the school so bit hard to find a spot. Great evening .curry dishes varied in prices between 11 and 15 mostly.
Wow my first visit. Food was excellent can't wait till my family member moves to Uppingham in the next few weeks. We had a 17 month old child with us who loved the food. So looking forward to my next visit to try more of their excellent food. Waiting staff could not do more. They do need to acquire a high chair if I was to find any fault however it did not detract from a lovely time.
We’ve here a few times and always had great service and a delicious meal. Would definitely recommend trying!
Very welcoming and attentive staff. Please note that no alcohol is sold but you may bring your own. Also note that it is cash only, no credit cards accepted. Huge range of dishes on the menu. Our chosen dishes were authentic Indian meals not adapted to European tastes. The pork and chicken was beautifully tender and delicious. It was odd that on one side we had a well behaved mature hen party (with alcohol) and behind us was a group of students from the famous Uppingham public school equally well behaved.
